My Short Ghost Story

The Ghost of Woodgate Valley
By
Robert Burns

It all started one moonlit night. I was walking though Woodgate Valley to get home after a long day at school. It was nine o’clock.
As I was walking, I heard strange sounds coming from behind some tree. My heart was beating furiously. I thought it was a man with a knife. But curiosity took the better of me.
I noticed a white figure behind the trees, as I got closer. It was a man standing and looking down to the ground. The clothing that he wore was dated back to the Tudor times.
He lifted his head up when he heard me coming closer and I saw that he had no eyes, but blood pouring from his eye sockets. His teeth were sharp and pointed as he smiled at me.
Underneath the man was a young woman with her throat ripped open. I ran all the way to the police station and told them what I had witnessed. They went to where I had seen the man and the dead woman. When they returned, they told me that there was nothing there. One policeman though, had recognized what I saw.

He told me that every ten years during a full moon on a winter’s night, a man with no eyes and blood for tears would rip a young woman’s throat with his razor sharp teeth. Then he and the body would vanish out of nowhere and leave no evidence behind.

The Use of Music in Films

Title: Back to the Future
Director: Robert Zemeckis
Date: 4th December 1985 (UK)

This is a scene that I got from the film Back to the Future. Where Martin McFly is looking around Hill Valley in 1955 and the music in the background is "Mr Sandman" by The Four Aces. The reason why they chose this song was making the audience think that he was dreaming being in 1955, (The Sandman is a figure of sleep).
The song was recorded in 1954, which suits with the mise en scene of the film that Martin McFly is not in 1985 but in 1955.

Title: Final Destination
Director: James Wong
Date: 17th March 2000 (USA)

This music that I have chose was in the Credit scene in the film of Final Destination. It has a strong connection to the Narrative about people dying, young and old. The song was sung by Joe 90 and here is a link to the full lyrics - http://www.vagalume.com.br/joe-90/and-when-i-die.html.

As you can see in the lines underneath. The song is all about dying, which suits to the theme of the film. Knowing that their time will come in the end.

I'm not scared of dyin'
And I don't really care
If its peace you find in dyin'
Let the time be near

Sound in TV and Film

Within this opening scene of Sherlock Holmes, a Game of Shadows. I will be explaining the sounds within this clip, Non-Diegetic and Diegetic sound.

If you notice that the clip starts with a non-diegetic sound of a old western piano playing. Then it slowly goes into a diegetic sound of the horses hooves clattering and carriage wheels turning, with a horse naying.
The music is also picking up tempo with the sound of the chelo, which is followed with the sounds of the gun being loaded or cocking.
A drum beat is introduced, which is used to emphasise the editing and the narrative of the clips.
Then you can hear a fate sound of foot steps of somebody running and then cut to the horse and carriage sound. Including the sound of the reins on the horses clinking and the Crow or Raven cawing.
This carries on until a violin sound is added. Sherlock drops and rolls and we hear a thud before we hear the door being kicked in.
Final, there is a sound bridge of the wind, which takes us from outside to inside and a echo silence.

Hot Fuzz Analyse

Here is a sequence from the film 'Hot Fuzz'. I have chosen twelve frames of the characters reaction of seeing the main character, Sargent Angel, alive.

If you notice that each Frame is a close up of the characters, to see the expression on their faces. You can also see that most of the characters in the frames are in centre and off centre, but some of them are a bit longer then others, to give a sense of anticipation to the audience, seeing who will start off the gun fight or shoot first.
